Declining Numbers Guide School Board Budget

E-mail Print PDF
Declining enrollment has forced the local Catholic School Board to make cuts. The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board recently passed an operating budget that reflected the challenges of decreased bodies in schools. Among the cuts, 15 Educational Assistants were lost earlier this year, but the Board says most of those positions were recalled in open teachings spots. Director of Education for the School Board Michael O’Keefe says he doesn't see it as a cut, but one of the measures taken is maximizing use of classroom space and minimizing use of portables to reduce heating and cleaning costs. The $230-million dollar operating budget was recently passed at a Board of Trustees meeting with a %2.56 increase from the 2008-2009 school year.

Local Residents Threaten Legal Action Against Town of Huntsville

E-mail Print PDF
The town of Huntsville has been threatened with legal action by lawyers representing two local residents. Lawyers for James and Terry McCaffery have threatened to seek an injunction to stop the University of Waterloo project claiming the terms of use for the park would prohibit any use for education purposes. The terms of the land state the use can be for athletic, exhibition or entertainment purposes. Mayor Claude Doughty broke the news of legal action this morning on the Moose’s Moment with the Mayor, and says the action is unfortunate since the majority of the town supported the project. The town unanimously agreed at a special council meeting Tuesday to move the building 90 degrees. The structure will now sit on a road allowance with a 6-foot buffer zone. Construction is set to begin in the next month. The McCafferys are not able to comment at this time.
