Aspen Valley Wildlife Centre Needs Help Naming New Animals

E-mail Print PDF

Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Rosseau has kicked off a contest to help find the perfect names for some of its new animal residents. Last month, Aspen Valley received 9 animals from Springwater Provincial Park including a silver fox and 2 lynx that have no names. Julie Woodyer, Chair of Aspen’s Board of Directors, says the board feels it’s important every animal in their care is recognized as individuals, which is why they always get named. The board is reaching out to the public, including folks who visited the animals while they lived at Springwater, to help come up with some great names. The public are being invited to make a donation to the sanctuyary to have the opportunity to name the animals. The highest donation received by July 1st will receive the honour of naming the silver fox. All of the funds raised will be used to care for the Springwater animals. The sanctuary plans to seek the public’s help in naming other animals throughout the summer. Those hoping to name the silver fox can visit the sanctuary’s website at www.aspenvalley.ca and make a PayPal donation, adding the note “silver fox naming contest” to the donation.

Norm Miller Talks Budget and McGuinty Resignation

E-mail Print PDF

MPP Norm Miller says he's not surprised with Dalton McGuinty's resignation from provincial politics. Miller says it’s appropriate for McGuinty to step down because he wasn't doing the job of an MPP and is no longer the Premier.

The Liberals will now have to hold a by-election in McGuinty's riding of Ottawa-South. Meantime, the provincial budget passed this week with the help of the NDP. Our MPP's biggest concern is the amount of spending it promises. Norm Miller says the Liberals essentially bought the NDP's support with a billion dollars in extra spending which he calls worrisome.

Miller says the Progressive Conservatives felt that it was time for an election by defeating the budget in order to change the province's course to get spending back on track.

A local MP is calling for the creation of an independent Trent Severn Water Authority. MP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, Barry Devolin says there is massive potential with the TSW and by removing it from Parks Canada and setting up an independent body that reports to the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, that potential can be realized. Devolin says he's heard from many people that the TSW needs to be more of an economic driver in the region with a focus on marketing and improvements in visitor experience. A Private Member's Bill was introduced this week in the House of Commons.
