OPP Asking You to Be Safe on the Roads and Waterways

E-mail Print PDF

It’s the first long weekend in Muskoka and the OPP is asking drivers and boaters to be safe. Huntsville OPP Constable Lynda Cranney says with the nice weather expected in Muskoka, we’re going to see more people on our roads and in the water.

Cranney also says one of the things you have to remember is that the water level is a higher this year because of the flooding last month.

Cranney suggests you check all your safety gear before going out on the water and always wear a lifejacket. Last year, 22 people died in boating incidents, 18 of which weren’t wearing lifejackets.

This weekend is the kick-off to Safe Boating Awareness Week, which runs until May 24th.

OSPCA Suggests Keeping Your Dog at Home During Fireworks

The sky will be booming with fireworks this Victoria Day long weekend and the OSPCA is asking you to keep your dog at home. Branch Manager for the Muskoka Animal Centre Jane McCamus says you really shouldn’t take your dog with you to watch the fireworks.

However, if you have to bring your dog with you, McCamus suggests keeping them on a leash and make sure they have proper identification in case they do panic and run off.

Meantime, if you plan on having fireworks in your backyard, McCamus says you should keep your pet in the house.

The OSPCA also suggests putting your pet in a dark room so the sound and light from the fireworks doesn’t scare them off.

ARC Decides on Recommendation for West Parry Sound Family of Schools

E-mail Print PDF

The Accommodation Review Committee has come to a consensus on what to recommend to the Near North District School Board.  At last night’s final ARC meeting, the committee narrowed their options down to two with over 75 percent voting in favour of an option brought forth by parent rep Darrin O’Brien.

O’Brien says the recommendation will mean grade seven and eight students will spend time in the high school.

The next step in the process would be the board receiving the recommendation as information on June 25th before making a decision whether to accept the proposal or deny it on September 24th.  There will be one final public meeting before September 24th where members of the ARC committee and the public can address the board members to plead their case for this proposal.  No date has been set for that meeting yet.

E-mail Print PDF

The Province of Ontario is helping communities rebuild and recover from recent flood damage. Support is being provided through the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP), which will help people in declared disaster areas clean up and repair their homes and small businesses. The up to $18 million in funding will also be used to rebuild essential municipal infrastructure like bridges and roads.

Disaster areas receiving support include:

- Bancroft

- Bracebridge

- Hastings Highlands

- Huntsville

- Joly

- Kawartha Lakes

- Lake of Bays

- Magnetawan

- Markstay-Warren

- Minden Hills

- Ramara

- South Algonquin

- Sundridge

The province will continue to work with all affected municipalities to assess the full extent of flood damage and determine eligible costs. The flooding started on April 18 in several areas of central, eastern and northern Ontario, due to heavy rain storms and rapid snow melt. The new Ontario government is committing up to $18 million to the affected municipalities through the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program. The program offers two kinds of support – one that helps municipalities respond to emergencies and repair public assets and another that helps individuals and businesses get back on their feet and replace essential property. "The immediate response of emergency workers and residents has been nothing short of extraordinary," says Linda Jeffrey, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. "The province will continue to work with our municipal partners to recover and rebuild so that our communities can return to normal as soon as possible."
