Strike Headquarters Open as LCBO Dispute Continues

Muskokans are being encouraged to stock up on liquor ahead of the long weekend. Strike headquarters have opened under the union representing LCBO workers. OPSEU says one of the major issues in the ongoing dispute is the difference in pay between full and part-time employees. The deadline for a strike is Friday. If workers do walk out, it’d be the first time in the 87-year history of the LCBO. Seven headquarters opened in Toronto, Ottawa, London, Thunder Bay Sudbury, Peterborough and Hamilton with an additional 26 headquarters opening through the week.

 

Muskoka Fire Danger Rating Downgraded to Moderate

Muskoka's fire danger rating has been downgraded. The Fire rating is now set at MODERATE after being set at HIGH for two weeks. Small fires are allowed in some areas of Muskoka, but there is still no daytime burning. Fire officials remind everyone that you must have tools and water to extinguish any fires. For details on burning regulations in your area, call your local fire department.

The frost warning has ended for Parry Sound-Muskoka. Earlier this morning, there was widespread frost in the region as temperatures fell below zero overnight. Today, we can expect a high of 13 degrees with a high UV Index.

 

A Yard Sale to Raise Funds for Cystic Fibrosis

A local mom continues her journey to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. The 4th Annual Phoenix Yard Sale for Cystic Fibrosis is happening this weekend at The Door in Huntsville. Melissa Bushey founded the event in honour of her son Phoenix who has the disease. She says the event gets better every year.

CF is a multi-system disease, affecting the lungs and digestive system. Cystic Fibrosis Canada says at least one Canadian dies from the disease every week with the average age of survival at about 48.

St. Mary School Scores Most Points in Energy Diet Challenge

A Huntsville elementary school is one of the winners of this year’s Classroom Energy Diet Challenge. Forty-thousand students from over 1,400 schools across Canada participated to increase their energy literacy through curriculum-based environmental challenges.

St. Mary School was the school with the most points. The grade 7/8s won $500 for a class party, $1,000 for class supplies or a field trip and another $500 to donate to the charity of their choice. They will be presented with their winnings at 10:00am today.

 

A Shocking Game 7 for Toronto Maple Leaf Fans

Local Leaf fans had their hopes shattered, as the Boston Bruins came back from a three-goal deficit to tie game 7 with 51 seconds left in regulation and then beat Toronto in overtime 5-4. Fans at On the Docks Pub in Huntsville watched in shocked silence when Patrice Bergeron scored the game-winner. This is what they had to say about the game.

Meantime, the New York Rangers advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals as they beat Washington 5-0 in Game 7.
