Sundridge Resident Charged With Murder

The former Mayor of Joly Township has been charged with first degree murder. 70 year-old Fred Preston of Sundridge remains in critical condition after allegedly shooting O.P.P. Constable Vu Pham, Monday. Preston served as Mayor of the Township a few years ago. Constable Pham was shot and killed after pulling over a vehicle in a rural area near London. It's reported Preston was shot 8 times during a gunfight with responding officers. He's also facing a charge of attempted murder.

Last Chance To Sign Health Care Petition

The push is on to sign the health care petition circulating in Huntsville. Parry Sound Muskoka MPP Norm Miller has been presenting the signatures in the legislature and will do so once again for the last time March 24,2010. The petition is to put pressure on the provincial government for funding for Muskoka Algqonuin Health Care. The local health organization is facing a cumulative deficit of $5.8 million and there may be zero funding to help. Residents can sign the petition this Saturday at the Huntsville Place Mall from 10am-4pm. The petition may also be downloaded from Norm Miller's website and handed into his office or to Huntsville Town Hall.

The Simcoe Muskoka region is seeing an increase in the mumps. The health unit says there have been 6 confirmed cases of mumps since September. Normally there is zero to 3 cases per year. Mumps is highly contagious and is transmitted through direct contact with saliva or mucus. Four out of 5 young adults are not fully protected against the mumps. Residents between the ages of 15and 40 who have any of the symptoms should contact their family physician.
Symptoms - fever -fatigue -muscle aches -loss of appetite -swelling of one or more alivary glands, which can give the appearance of "chipmunk cheeks" -swelling of one or both testicles

Fundraiser For Local Mechanic Who Has Had Hands Amputated

Residents are pulling together for a local mechanic who lost his hands in a snowmobiling accident. Chris Annis of Port Sydney had his hands and toes amputated last month after being exposed to minus 30 degree temperatures. A benefit dance and silent auction will be held Friday March 19, 2010 to help the family.

FedNor Office Will Not Move To Toronto

Canada's Minister of Industry and Minister Responsible for FedNor is responding to insensitive rumours spread by the NDP. Tony Clement says two MPs in the Nickel Belt and Sault regions were telling falsehoods about the future of the Sudbury FedNor office, saying it was going to close and move to Toronto. Clement says the NDP is playing political games and that they shouldn't be so reckless because employees of FedNor were concerned for thier jobs. Since 2006 FedNor has invested more than $200 million in to Northern Ontario communities.

The Township of Lake of Bays has its first candidate for Mayor. Dan Waters has filed his papers for the 2010 municipal election. Waters was the MPP for Muskoka-Georgian Bay from 1990 to 1995 and currently runs a business in Lake of Bays. He says he has been asked by several residents to run for mayor and will make decisions that best reflect the needs of the community.

Gravenhurst Man Faces Charges Of Second Degree Murder

A Gravenhurst man faces charges after a house fire in Stouffville that claimed the life of a woman inside the house. Marion deacon was found inside her home during the blaze and emergency workers found a man who had been staying at the house outside the home, on the ground. An autopsy done Monday showed deacon died of blunt force trauma to the head. 43-year old Paul Kenyon faces charges of second degree murder. Kenyon is expected to remain in hospital for several days.

Police Charge Two Huntsville Men After Theft At Wal-Mart

Two Huntsville men have been arrested after TV’s went missing off the shelves in Wal-Mart. Huntsville OPP says two 42" televisions and a 50" were stolen from the store on Howland Drive. 27 year-old Nathan Mckeag and 29 year-old Ryan King were arrested yesterday. Both face charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime. King faces further charges of possession of a schedule one drug.
