Highway Expansion from Huntsville to North Bay Finished

The Highway 11 expansion between Huntsville and North Bay has been completed on time. The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines says the new four-lane highway will make travel easier and safer for families and businesses and will strengthen tourism and the economy in the North. Since 2003, the Ontario government has invested $717 million in the expansion of Highway 11 between Powassan and Huntsville. The 2012 Budget brings the provincial government's total investment in northern highways to over $4.5 billion since 2003.

 

One Dead in Cottage Roof Collapse

One person is dead after a roof collapse at a cottage southeast of Huntsville. OPP say the cottage in Lake of Bays Township was undergoing renovations. The collapse happened around 6 o’clock Saturday night and reports suggest others were present at the time, but there is no word of any other injuries. The victim's identity has not been released.

Concerned Citizens Report Drunk Driver

OPP are thanking the public for helping them nab a drunk driver near Minden. Concerned citizens called police on Friday night around 8:15 to report a possible impaired driver travelling on Highway 35 south of the village. Officers were able to intercept the vehicle at Highway 35 and Happy Hour Lane and determined the driver had indeed been consuming alcohol. A 44 year old Gravenhurst man has been charged with impaired driving, drive over 80, and dangerous driving.

OPP Checking for Impaired Boaters

Haliburton Highlands OPP continue patrolling local waterways this summer looking for impaired boaters. Last Saturday, officers were on Raven Lake in the Township of Algonquin Highlands when they stopped a boat around 10:20 pm. The operator was found to have been consuming alcohol and the 27 year old from Huntsville was charged with operate a vessel over 80mgs, as well as operate a vessel with an open container of liquor. The next night, officers were on Gull Lake in the Township of Minden Hills around 8:20 when they intercepted another boat in which the operator had been consuming alcohol. A 33 year old man from Stouffville was charged with operate a vessel over 80 mgs, and failure to have proof of competency on board a pleasure craft.

Orillia Man Dead After Crash in Severn Township

A 24 year old Orillia man is dead after the vehicle he was driving hit a hydro pole. Police are still investigating the crash, which happened this morning on Burnside Line in Severn Township at 9:25am. Burnside Line will be closed between Cambrian Road and Warminster Sideroad until 5pm today. The investigation into the cause of this collision is continuing.
