Britton Family Scholarship Winners Announced

Two students from BMLSS, Patricia Denbok and Stefanie Atkinson, along with two students from St. Dominic's Catholic High School, Elizabeth Leigh and Malcolm Dix are the recipients of this year's awards. Each scholarship is worth $5,000 and has been provided by Ted Britton and his family, in memory of Joan Britton. The awards recognize perseverance and excellence. Patricia Denbok will be pursuing classics studies at Brock University and hopes to be a museum curator. Stefanie Atkinson will be attending Guelph University to study bio-medical sciences and would like to be a surgeon. Elizabeth Leigh will be attending Trent University where she will study psychology. She hopes to become a psychotherapist. Malcolm Dix, who will be attending Carleton University for English studies and hopes to attain his honours BA and then pursue a post-graduate degree. He wants to enter the teaching profession. There were 34 applicants this year. Students entering grade 12 in September will be eligible for the 2013 Britton Family Scholarships. Application forms are available through the guidance departments at both schools.

 

Bracebridge Firefighters Responded to Saw Dust Fire on Father's Day

On Sunday, the Bracebridge Fire Department was called to a saw mill property on Bird Lake Road at 10:55am. The department says firefighters encountered a smoldering sawdust fire that had spread into a wooded area. Firefighters set up a water shuttle and fought the blaze. Today they say extra caution was taken by the property owner, with the area being covered in dirt to sufficiently snuff out any possibility of further flames.

Break-ins in Lake of Bays Over The Weekend

Huntsville police are asking for your help in a couple of recent break-ins. Police say, on Friday around 1:00pm, they there told about a break-in on Dwight Beach Road that happened sometime since June 13th, 2012. The thieves went into a Lake of Bays cottage and took a 42” Samsung flat screen TV. Then later on Friday around 6:00pm, police say a home on White House Road in Lake of Bays was ransacked. The thieves took off with a bunch of stuff including q 40” Sony Bravia TV, Ladies jewellery, men’s clothing, tool box containing numerous tools, air compressor, gun locker, 3 rifles, Remington shotgun. Anyone with information is asked to call police for Crime Stoppers.

 

Huntsville Man Charged for Driving While High

A Huntsville man will be in court in two months to face impaired driving charges. Police say just before 2am on June 18 th, 2012, officers were patrolling Highway 11 when they say a car going well below the speed limit. The cops pulled the car over and found that the driver was high. Police arrested and charged the driver. Thirty-six-year-old Christopher Fairbarn will appear in Huntsville court August 1st, 2012.

Hot Humid Temps For Muskoka This Week

Muskokans are being asked to brace for a few days of high heat and humidity. Environment Canada says southern parts of the province will bake in 30-degree heat beginning Tuesday through to at least Thursday. With the humidity factored in it will feel more like 40-degree weather. Residents are being advised to stay close to air conditioners and drink lots of water.
