My love affair with local radio goes back to “Spinneramma” on CKOC! It was that feature that tuned me into radio at the age of eight. Since then it’s been my dream to be a part of a morning show.
After wrapping up three years of broadcasting and film production training I headed West and landed in Nelson, BC. I loved that little oasis of a town so much that I spent seven years there. During my time in Nelson I bought a house, raised some chickens and a few very mean roosters, got married and had two children. I also did some film production and odd jobs just to pay the bills. But what I'm most proud of is my radio program called "Hitchhiker Chronicles". It was a live, one-hour show that featured travelers and their stories, combined with an eclectic mix music.
The birth of my two kids, brought my husband and I back to Ontario to be close to our families. We quickly moved to Muskoka where my husband began building his dream of owning his own timber framing business. He now successfully runs Everwood Timberworks (yes, shamless plug).
As for me, I've got the privilege of keeping you up to speed on what's going on in Muskoka and I'm having a blast doing it!
Thanks for listening!

And The Winner Is.....

Well, we'll just have to wait until December 30th to find out the winners of this year's Community Recognition Awards. According to Mike Greaves, the Chair of Huntsville's Parks and Recreation Committe, close to 60 nominations were submitted to the Town. Twenty-six awards will be handed out in three categories: Sports and Recreation, Arts and Culture and General Community. Although we have to wait to find out who the lucky recipients are, one thing is for sure...the awards ceremony will be a nice ending to the Olympic Torch Relay Celebration the day of. Be sure to head out to both and show your community spirit, and the surrounding towns that Huntsville knows how to celebrate!

It's finally here! Michael Jackson fans will be flocking to theatres all over Canada to catch the movie hightlighting the making of his This Is It tour that unfortunately did not happen. The Capitol Theatre in Huntsville has it showing nightly at 7:15. The show is suitable for anyone so I highly suggest bringing the kids. Incase you, for some odd reason, need incentive to see the movie...check out the trailer here..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyrkcz7msfY

GARTH THOMAS SIGNS OFF FOR THE LAST TIME: SHWA-SHWA

It began as a punchy rant this morning, as it usually does with Garthy, but there was a certainty to his words like never before. See, when talking to Garth, often you hang on for the contradition to come at the end of what he has just said. It's part of why I love him so much. This morning when he said he was retiring, I wasn't looking for him to eat his words. I knew he meant it. But, I certainly did not expect it. In part because he's verbally retired before, a few times actually, but he always talked himself out it and would be back on the airwaves the next day. That's because he truly loves radio. And Huntsville. Garth came to Huntsville July 1st, 1958 following radio training at Ryerson University. He signed on with CKAR, but accepted another stint at a station because they offered more money. As I understand it, CKAR couldn't last even a year without Garth. They called him offering more coin and so he returned to Huntsville airwaves and has been here ever since. Over the years Garth has gained a following like no other broadcaster in this town. I wish I could speak of his past but I'll decline because I don't know all that much about his career. He's extremely humble and doesn't like to talk about himself, but one of these days I'll get the history out of him. Terrible how we always wait for the end to find out the beginning. Anyway, I do know a little about his history, but I'll save it for Monday morning when we do a tribute to Garth on 105.5. Garth is one of the most caring individuals I know and I'm proud to have had the opportunity to work with him. And, his dedication to radio and this community should never be forgotten.
PS - if you have a favorite memory of Garth, drop me a quick line and we'll read it Monday morning during our tribute!! (just click on my name up top to send your story or kind words)

My Fellow Parallel Parking Phobes : Holla!

Amazingly, I passed my driver's test first time 'round. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I'm a bad driver. I'm a great driver. Wasn't then though. I'll never forget that test......
First I had to find a car to use since my parents each had standards. So my sweet grandfather lent me his (...actually looking back on it, the most stressful time of the test wasn't the test itsself, it was driving to and from the test with my grandfather). I was sitting in the parking lot of the test centre, white knuckles gripping the wheel, wishing I had an automatic wiper for the sweat coming down my brow, anxiously waiting for the instructor. Just when I was trying to figure out a way to get outta there without my grandfather writing me out of his will, the door opened and the instructor got in. He gave me a verbal description of the route and said "right then...we're off". So naturally, I started the car. The grind of the engine wasn't natural though. The instructor promptly told me "You can only start a car once, Sarah" and in a very annoyingly dainty way, check marked a box on his clip board. (I'm surprised he didn't lick the tip of his pencil first while staring me straight in the eye). Once I figured out how to actually get the car moving, I was ok.Until.....the dreaded "parallel park". Couldn't do it. I tried 5 times!! I was only supposed to try 3, but he gave me two extra shots at it, strictly for his pleasure of watching me sweat it out I'm sure. Could've used this......
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzD0scGdwQY&feature=related
To this day, I don't parallel park.
Like I said, I passed the test and since then have worked on my driving skills and am proud to say, I'm a great driver! So, for those people who may be waiting for the drive test centres to open up, consider the extra time an opportunity to bone up on your parallel parking! Maybe even outfit your car with that handy extra wheel if you've got the know how!
PS...a little word of advice when you do finally get your appointment for your test...be aware of the speed limit! The instructors won't sit there quietly beside you while you drive...they'll ask questions too. Like.... "What's the speed limit here?".
