If the provincial budget of the Ontario Liberals passes legislature, there could be more consequences here. This, a warning from Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli. He says that cutting an apprenticeship tax credit for call centre training could eliminate several hundred jobs in North Bay. Meanwhile, Ontario Tory leader Tim Hudak has spoken to northern media about his vision of the North. In a conference call, he states he would view the ONTC as an essential element for economic infrastructure.

Students working a summer job for the city of North Bay will have a bit of a tighter budget in the coming weeks. City Hall officials approved a budget measure that means wages will be frozen at 2012 levels as part of several cost-saving measures. Deputy Mayor Sean Lawlor says the student wage freeze will save about $10,000.

Following a successful effort to encourage businesses to become more energy efficient, the utility is now reaching out to a new segment of residential users. Ever wonder why North Bay seems to be such a generous community? It doesn't just seem that way, it is that way, according to a local business leader. Northern Honda General Manager David Barber says his dealership and many other companies set money aside to give back to the community that keeps their businesses alive. Barber says North Bay seems to have what he calls a "tangible ethic" to give back where they can. Honda has already contributed to Ride for Dad and Crime Stoppers this month.

If you enjoy photography, you'll enjoy this. For the second year, Caisse Populaire in North Bay is creating a fundraising calendar featuring images from local photographers. The calendars are free giveaways for their clients, but businesses sponsor the pages. The 2013 calendar raised over $2,000 for palliative care. You have until September to submit your pictures for the 2014 edition.

“Hero” the Border Collie continues to give North Bay a growling good time. The pooch, and owner Sara Carlson, first got attention when they appeared on David Letterman's famous "Stupid Pet Tricks" segment a few months back, blowing bubbles. Hero keeps learning new tricks and getting new fans. He's just hit 15,000 views on one of his many YouTube videos, and was just featured in Dog Sport Magazine.

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities is encouraging you to contact Northern Development Minister Michael Gravelle. FONOM says you can easily send comments to the minister through their website, OurOntarioNorth.org. The group says Gravelles' recent statement that ONTC divestment might not be the only option is the first sign of hope on the issue. They want you to help keep the momentum going.
