North Bay Plays Key Role in Connecting the North

North Bay is playing a pivotal role in connecting the rest of Northern Ontario. The Executive Director of the Blue Sky Economic Growth Corporation says they received FEDNOR funding to complete a study of broadband capabilities across the entire region. Susan Church explains that the compiled data will be reviewed, and can pinpoint what new or improved infrastructure and technology is needed where. That could eventually have high speed internet accessibility for more, if not all, of the North.

Vehicle Crashes into Hydro Pole

A Sturgeon Falls man is facing multiple charges after crashing his vehicle into a hydro pole.  Police say it happened on Leclair Road on May 10th.  Police say the man took off after the crash and was found in a wooded area nearby.  The 29-year-old man fought police and was arrested.  He faces impaired driving, assaulting an officer and other charges.  He was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Graffiti Under Investigation

Police are investigating after a number of complaints regarding graffiti.  Police say spray-painted graffiti has been found in about four locations since May 11th.  Police say the graffiti is very similar and it seems one person may be responsible.  There are no suspects at this time.

Man Tries to Flee from Police

A man is facing five charges after attempting to flee from police.  An officer with West Nipissing Police Services tried to pull over a vehicle on Roy Street in Sturgeon Falls on May 12th.  The 21-year-old driver took off, causing a short police chase.  After he was caught, the driver admitted to stealing the vehicle and police found him in possession of drugs.  The man was also driving with twice the legal blood alcohol limit.  He was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Bust

A routine traffic stop has turned into a large drug bust.  Police stopped a vehicle on Dutrisac Road on May 14th.  Drugs and cash were found in the vehicle and the driver was arrested.  A further search at the 52-year-old’s home turned up more drugs.  The man faces a total of five drug and weapons-related charges.
