Gymtrix Hits Podium at Vaughn Invitational

The North Bay Gymtrix men's artistic team competed in Vaughn this past weekend at the 20th annual Vaughn Invitational.

Stephane Thibault was the Overall Silver medalist in the interclub 3 category. He also earned silver medals on rings and high bar as well as the bronze on pommel horse.

In Interclub Level 2, Matthew Fairbarn earned the gold medal on pommel horse, and four bronzes for floor, vault, parallel bars and Overall. 

Brandon Emmerson claimed the gold medal on vault and a bronze on Floor. Simon Gagne was the bronze medal winner on pommel horse.

Alex Summersby competing in the Level 1 division placed 4th on vault, 6th on parallel bars, 6th on rings and 8th overall.

Jack Mah performed in the demo category and was given highest remarks from the judges for his routines.

Another Championship for West Nipissing

On March 4th the Youth Bowling Canada Provincial Championships were held in the Greater Sudbury area. Connor Lafleur (5 yrs old), Jean Tremblay (12 yrs old) and Marc Lecuyer (15 yrs old), along with their coach Marc Lafleur won the gold medal.  

As a result, they represented Northern Ontario in the Boys Combo Team division of the YBC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS held in St. John's, Newfoundland this past weekend.  And the team won gold again to claim the National Title.

Girard, Ballagh commit to Lakers Volleyball

The Lakers Men's Volleyball Program is happy to announce the commitment of Eric Girard (Ottawa, ON) and Michael Ballagh (Teeswater, ON) to attend Nipissing University in the Fall of 2012.

"I am very excited to have Michael Ballagh and Eric Girard join our program." said head coach Eric Yung.

Girard a 6'3" left side hitter played high school volleyball for College Catholique Franco-Ouest and club volleyball for the Ottawa Fusion. Girard is majoring in English.

"Nipissing has a great volleyball program, great residences and lots of one on one interaction with the professors," said Girard. "I am looking forward to going to school where my parents grew up."

Yung added that he was incredibly impressed with Eric's ability during a training session over the Christmas Break. "Eric brings a fury of energy to the court and has great physical attributes for our level of play." Said Yung.

Ballagh a 6'1" left side hitter is enrolled in the Bachelor of Physical Health and Education program with the goal of becoming a teacher. He led his Madill Secondary School high school team to an OFSAA (AA) antique bronze in 2010 and a bronze medal in 2011.  

 "I have had my eyes on Michael since the 2010 AA OFSAA where he led his team to an Antique Bronze.  He is an extremely athletic left side that should stabilize our ball control as well as contributing to our potent offence." Said Yung.

"I am hoping both Eric and Michael will make immediate impact on our program, they along with couple of returning left sides will be competing to be in the starting six."

 

Two Canadore Weightlifters Win Gold

PRESS RELEASE

The Canadian Masters Weightlifting Championship were held in Toronto's Verity Village this past weekend.  Two members of the Candore Panthers weightlifting club came home with gold.  Danny Gosselin wins the 85kg class making it back to back gold's in the last two years.  Gosselin going 5 for 6 with his best snatch 90kg and best clean and Jerk 115kg. Gosselin defends his Championship vs. provincial rival Gorge Valhos of Toronto. Also of the Panthers weightlifting club Dennis Hunter wins gold in the 94 Kg class.  Dennis's first Canadian Championship's and he went perfect on the day going 6 out of 6 lifts. Dennis best 70kg snatch and 90 kg clean and jerk were good enough to win him a gold,  and Capped off a great day for the two local lifters.

 

Thunderbirds Soar at Team III Championships

PRESS RELEASE 

The CT-33 Thunderbirds swim club competed at the Team III Championships this past weekend at the Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Gold Pool at Laurentian University in Sudbury.   Many swimmers contribute points to the teams standings.  Michael Denomme led the team with 11 points in the 11-12 year old category finishing 2nd in the 200 fly, 6th in the 100 breast, and 8th in the 200 breast.  Alex Papatheodorou had four top 8 finishes in the 13-14 age category while Ryan Venditti and Kylie Manning both had 3 top eight finishes.    

Top eight awards also went to Travis Allured, Trael Daly Stevens, Jillian Picco, each earning points for the team.

Personal best times were achieved by swimmers Sarah Allured, Ashleigh Brady, Jane Chirico, Leah Chirico, Elle Louise George, Monika Hotson, William Hotson, Olivia Lyle, Jaimee Reynolds, Olivia Trottier, and Madison Whittet.

Congratulations to all of the CT-33 swimmers for representing the team well at this meet.  Special thanks to team coaches Pierre Simard, Amy Jackson and Penny Lecour for all their hard work preparing the team for this event.

 

North Bay Wins Under 14 Provincial Volleyball Championship

 The Wildcat Volleyball Club of North Bay has won the under 14 provincial championship.  The team did it against a club from Toronto that defeated North Bay during round robin.  Next up for the Wildcats is the national championship which runs from May 20th to the 22nd in Toronto.
