It’s official. Since October 3rd, the Timmins and District Hospital’s revised no smoking policy has been in effect. No smoking is allowed anywhere on the grounds of the hospital including the parking lot and personal vehicles. All staff, patients and visitors are advised if they do wish to smoke it has to be beyond hospital property, which means the sidewalk. Because of the revised by-law, anyone caught smoking on TDH property is liable for a minimum $225 fine. The hospital also understands the difficulty of quitting smoking and is offering cessation treatment options for admitted patients. Statistics show Northeastern Ontario has the highest frequency of smokers in the province, 25-percent compared to 19-percent.
