Workers at Ontario Northland are behind a drive to save the rail freight division at the transportation agency. During weekend meetings employees at plants in North Bay, Timmins, Cochrane and Englehart gave unanimous support to the initiative. The goal is to form a Port Authority under federal legislation which would then raise money to build a rail line to the Ring of Fire. Nipissing Timiskaming MP Jay Aspin is working with the employees to achieve this. The first step is getting the province to transfer the ONTC assets to the proposed Port Authority but that’s not expected to be an issue. The McGuinty Liberals announced this past spring they’re selling Ontario Northland to help lower their $14.4 billion deficit.
