This weekend will see local runners honour the victims of a horrific crime. In April a number of bombs were detonated along the Boston Marathon, killing a number of people and injuring even more. Now, the small village of Boston in Norfolk County is set to play host to its own memorial marathon this Saturday. Hundreds of people are expected to attend the four mile run, as well as several local politicians. Anyone interested in participating can meet at the Boston Public School at 8:15 tomorrow morning. 

The OPP in Haldimand County is hosting its Drug Drop-off Day. Starting next week, residents can take their unused or expired prescription medication to the Cayuga High School parking lot where police will safely dispose of it. The campaign aims to fight abuse of prescribed drugs, with 24% of teens in Haldimand, Norfolk and Brant reporting they’ve misused medicine that was stolen from home. The event will run on Saturday, May 11th from ten O’clock until three.

A 14-year-old Hamilton girl has been arrested after throwing paint over her neighbour’s car. According to police, on Monday a 64-year-old man living near East 34th Street saw the suspect pouring paint onto his wife’s vehicle before running away. He followed her and called the police. Officers later arrested the girl, charging her with mischief under $5,000.

Haldimand County officials are inviting residents to celebrate the grand opening of a new trail. The Chippewa Trail runs between Haldibrook Road in Caledonia and Nebo Road in Hamilton. There will be prizes handed out to anyone who completes the whole journey on the day of the grand opening. Anyone attending is advised to car pool as parking is minimal. The opening ceremony will be held next Saturday from 11 that morning.

With warm weather coming in local officials are taking the opportunity to talk about safety. Brantford police remind citizens that by law every person in Ontario under the age of 18 must wear a helmet while riding a bike. This week is National Summer Safety Week, and Brant County Health Unit encourages parents to set a good example for their kids by wearing a helmet. Head injuries are still common, and are the leading cause of serious injury and death for kids playing outside. Health Unit officials say wearing protection can decrease bike related injuries by up to 85%, and can potentially save a child’s life.
