Child Abuse Culprit Handed Sentence

A former Six Nation’s pastor found guilty of sexual abuse has been sentenced. 60-year-old Ronald Burning was in court on several offences against children that took place over a 40 year period. Several victims and their families were in court for his hearing yesterday and read out their statements of the abuse they suffered. Burning was sentenced to ten years prison time. He must also give a DNA sample for the Sex Offenders Registry which he will be listed on for the rest of his life.

 

Local Couple Loses Investment Money

A Dunnville couple has lost money after investing in solar energy. A year ago David and Margaret Crumb were visited by a door to door salesman who convinced them to install a ground monitored solar generator system. They were assured that a program from the Ontario Power Authority would pay them for the energy they produced, and handed over a $30,000 deposit. However a year later they’ve not received anything they paid for. Crumb has said that at the time he didn’t check with Haldimand County Hydro to make sure he could install the equipment, and they’ve since said they would be unable to do so. Certified Solar Inc, the company that sold the Crumbs their equipment has admitted they didn’t know if they would be able to get permission to install it when they took the money.

 

Car Thief to be Sentenced

A 19-year-old who attacked Six Nations police has been given a sentencing date. Derrick Caryalho pleaded guilty in Ontario Court yesterday to assault with a weapon and dangerous driving. In May of last year two Six Nations officers found a car on Fifth Line Road that had been reported as stolen. When they tried to pull the vehicle over the driver abandoned the car. The chase lead to Sixth Line Road where Caryalho had found another vehicle which he tried to drive into the officers. His sentencing will take place on June 10th.

 

Campaign to Keep Refugee in Country Fails

A Hamilton woman has been deported to Cairo. Waffa Abdou, mother of three Canadian born children, was held in a detention centre for 100 days after her immigration application was improperly filed. Many supporters rallied to have Abdou kept in the country, with MP Dave Christopherson even appealing to Stephen Harper. Abdou can still apply for sponsorship by her husband, but must do some from Egypt. Immigration officials say the process can take up to a year.

 

Panhandlers Attack Victim

Two men have been charged after a citizen was assaulted in downtown Hamilton. According to reports, early Saturday morning the suspects were panhandling around King Street West. They approached the 49-year-old victim and asked him for money before punching him. One of the culprits then grabbed the man’s wallet and took cash from it. Police later found the two suspects near Queen Street. 48-year-old Michael Doy and 28-year-old Brian Graham of Hamilton were held in custody and have both been charged with robbery.

 

Drunk Driver Charged

A 47-year-old Glanbrook woman has been arrested for impaired driving. According to police, on Saturday evening she was seen driving erratically near Rymal Road. She allegedly ran a red light before swerving into oncoming traffic at one point. Police managed to pull her over and gave her a breathalyzer test which found her to be over twice the legal limit.
