New Recruits for Brantford Police Force

A number of dogs will be joining the Brantford Police Service. On Monday night the city council approved $73,000 to fund a canine unit. In the past Brantford police have had to call in such resources from other cities to help investigations, but they aren’t always available. Plans are to buy two German Shepherds by the end of summer, with the pups going through training throughout the autumn to be ready for duty before 2014.

 

New Measures Needed For Brantford's Cat Problem

Brantford authorities are looking at ways to fight the city’s out of control cat population. According to officials there’s an estimated 200,000 feral strays in the area. Yesterday saw feline advocates rally outside City Hall, holding signs and calling for council to adopt a trap, neuter and return policy. Authorities are considering changing bylaws to be similar for how the city handles stray dogs, and by possibly increasing the number of pets a homeowner is allowed to keep. Many people are emotional over the issue, and are worried that cats will continue to be euthanized to control their population.

 

Fire Crews Prepared for Long Weekend

Norfolk County fire officials are warning residents to take care ahead of the Victoria Day weekend. Many people let off fireworks to celebrate the holiday, and irresponsible use can lead to serious injuries. Officials advise users to carefully read and follow all label directions and to keep a water hose nearby when letting them off. They also suggest keeping onlookers a safe distance away from fireworks, and to light only one at a time. Similarly, children should be kept away from sparklers as they can set clothes alight and leave severe burns.

 

Human Remains Found in Tim Bosma Case

Police investigating the disappearance of Ancaster resident Tim Bosma have found human remains they`re ``convinced`` belong to him. Following a thorough search several locations were linked to the current suspect, 27-year-old Dellen Millard of Toronto, and at one of those locations the remains were found and appear to have been burnt. At a press conference held today Hamilton Police Chief Glenn De Caire announced they will continue to follow every lead, and that their investigation is far from over. They acknowledged the public`s help in the case, and urge anyone with information to keep calling 905 546 2100 or Crime Stoppers with their tips. Millard has been charged with forcible confinement and theft over $5,000. police are still searching for a second suspect.

 

Kidnapping Suspect to Make Court Appearance

A court appearance has been set for a suspect charged in the disappearance of Ancaster resident Tim Bosma. The 32-year-old disappeared last Monday when he took two men for a test drive of a truck he was selling and never returned. Now, 27-year-old Dellen Millard of Toronto has been charged with forcible confinement and theft. Millard`s lawyer says he is shocked by the charges, and they are planning to plead not guilty. Millard will appear in court tomorrow. Police are still searching for a second suspect, as well as Bosma himself. Police have recently announced they will be revealing a major development in this case later this morning.

 

Terrorist Loses Appeal to Stay in Canada

A convicted terrorist who lived in Brantford has been deported from Canada. Following a 26-year legal battle against his deportation, 69 year old Palestinian Mahmoud Mohammad Issa Mohammad was forced to leave the country on Sunday. He managed to find a home in Canada by hiding his criminal history, which includes attacking an Israeli airliner. Following that he used a number of legal loopholes and appeals to stay in the country for over 25-years. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says newly introduced reforms will prevent other terrorists from staying in Canada in the future.
