SIU Clears Officer in Highway 12 Crash

E-mail Print PDF

The Special Investigations Unit has concluded that a Southern Georgian Bay OPP officer was not responsible for the injuries to a speeding driver on Highway 12.  The SIU's investigation revealed that in the early morning hours of December 15th, an officer conducting radar near Port McNicoll clocked a car going at least 160km/h and began to chase, but quickly slowed.  Soon after, the officer began to see car parts on the highway near Triple Bay Road before seeing the speeding car in the ditch with the driver bleeding badly from his face.  The 18-year-old driver was taken to a Midland hospital with a forehead gash and a broken nose.  A collision reconstructionist report estimates the speed of the man's vehicle right before the first impact to be 167 to 170 km/h and any suggestion that the OPP officer was responsible for this collision is not supported by the reconstructionist's conclusions.  SIU Director Ian Scott says there was no physical evidence to suggest that the involved OPP cruiser was in contact with the speeding car or any other object during this event.

New contracts will be imposed on tens of thousands of educators in Ontario public schools.  Education Minister Laurel Broten announced this morning that she will use Bill 115 to enforce the new collective agreements on elementary and secondary school teachers that freeze wages and stop strikes while the government works to balance a $14.4 billion deficit.  Broten says after the contracts are imposed, Bill 115 will be repealed.  The union representing high school teachers says they're not ruling anything out, but for now no walkouts are planned.  A response from the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is expected soon.
