Parents and students alike are questioning a school board move that will see some grade seven and eight students being moved into the Parry Sound High School next year. On Tuesday night, the Near North District School Board passed a motion for intermediate students from William Beatty, Nobel, and McDougall Elementary School to move into the high school. The board says the decision is based on enhanced programming opportunities for intermediate students in the areas of science, physical education, music, shops and other areas. All the details haven't been worked out at this time, but the board says parents and students will be kept informed as they continue this transition. There are two cases in the Near North District where the board says grades seven and eight students have been successfully transitioned to a high school setting. Three years ago, Chippewa Secondary School in North Bay became a 7-12 school and at the beginning of this school year, F.J. McElligott Secondary School welcomed its first grade 7 and 8 students. The board goes on to say many other school boards across Ontario are moving to a grade 7-12 secondary school model. Facebook and twitter blew up yesterday after the news hit with one student starting an online petition which has over 450 electronic signatures as of this morning.
