Hughes Praises Volunteer Groups

Volunteer groups that help animals in distress are getting some praise from the MP for Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing. Carol Hughes told her fellow MPs in the House of Commons that the work of volunteers is never done. On the weekend Hughes took part in the Moose FM radiothon in Elliot Lake involving the Society for Animals in Distress. Thanks to donations from the region, the radiothon surpassed its goal. Hughes commends groups like SAD for helping to educate people about animals and finding them new homes.

FedNor Helps Elliot Lake with Grant

FedNor is helping Elliot Lake recover a bit from last June’s Algo Centre Mall roof-top collapse. It’s giving the community $470,000-thousand to upgrade the former White Mountain Academy of the Arts building. The money will be used to modernize the former art school and convert it into a multi purpose facility that includes a business development centre.

Catholic Students Walk for Justice

Wednesday was the annual Walk for Justice for elementary students with the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board. This has become an annual event for the students as they learn about social justice issues faced by people in third world nations.

Huron Shores Imposes Fire Ban

The Municipality of Huron Shores has banned all fires because of the dry weather. The only exceptions are small, contained fires for cooking and warmth. The ban also means that permits that were granted for open air burning are cancelled until further notice.
