FONOM to GreenPeace: Rejoin Forestry Agreement

E-mail Print PDF

A Northern Ontario lobby group says Greenpeace should re-join a sustainable forestry agreement.   Greenpeace quit the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement because it claimed a forest company was logging a protected area and was building illegal logging roads.  Greenpeace was wrong on both counts and admitted its mistake.  Now the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities wants Greenpeace to rejoin the Boreal agreement.  The federation says instead of yelling from the sidelines, Greenpeace should re-enter the deal and work with all groups to keep forests sustainable.

Health Unit Provides Well Water Tips

E-mail Print PDF

Flooding and the threat of flooding can have a negative effect for people who use well water and septic systems.  If surface water gets into a well, the water is no longer safe to drink because it’s become contaminated with bacteria or viruses.  With that in mind the Sudbury Health Unit has some tips.  People can still use the water, but it should be boiled first.  The health unit adds once the flood waters recede, the well can be disinfected.  The health unit adds septic systems should not be used in flood situations and the tank should be pumped after the flood is over.

Province to Help Chi Cheemaun

E-mail Print PDF

The provincial government says it will pay for repairing the terminals where the Chi Cheemaun ferry docks.  MPP for Algoma Manitoulin, Mike Mantha, says the government will commit the $292,000 needed to carry out the work.  The low water level in Lake Huron prevented the Chi Cheemaun from docking resulting in the ferry season beginning at least one week late.  Mantha is grateful to the province for the money and the quick response because it means minimal disruptions to tourism traffic.  The Chi Cheemaun carries 200,000 passengers each year and generates $25-milion in tourism dollars.
