Area police are warning the public about distraction thefts by con artists.  One theft involves a woman in a shopping mall trying to give away a gold necklace that belonged to a family member.  The woman puts the necklace around another woman’s neck and at the same time removes the victim’s gold necklace.  The victim doesn’t learn that her gold necklace is missing until the con artist has left the area.  Another scenario has the thief stopped at a highway ramp flagging traffic down.  If you stop you’ll get a sob story about a family member in need.  The con artist tries to sell you what looks like expensive jewelry so they can help their family.  The jewelry will have a 10, 14 or 18 carat stamp on it but of course that’s fake too.
